History of Amissville

Amissville is full of history.  French Huguenots and the English first settled here in the 18th century.  Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron granted this land to Joseph Amiss and Joseph Bayse around 1763.  The land owned by Joseph Amiss was then given to his sons.  In 1810, the first post office in Amissville was founded and run by Amiss himself.   The small town mostly consisted of the Bayse and Amiss families during that time and the town voted to name the town after the Amiss family, hence the name Amissville.

Amissville is also near some historical Civil War action including an involvement with George A. Custer’s Michigan Brigade of calvary and General A.P. Hill’s corps.  Custer’s troops moved from their camp near Amissville and attacked Hill’s troops from the southside of Battle Mountain.  Custer’s brigade captured the Confederate artillery on July 24, 1863 at Battle Mountain.   Other notable Civil War battles include two in 1862 involving Genearl Stuart’s Confederate calvary, one at Corbin’s Crossroads and the other in Amissville.

Amissville is also home to Meadow Grove Farm and the Locust Grove/R.E. Luttrell Farmstead, both designated at Historical Places.
